The Bailey Method

The Bailey Method is a powerful tool and problem solver for HMA/Aggregate producers and Mix Designers.  This internationally recognized Tool Can be used for developing and analyzing blend gradations both in the lab and the field, allows the mix technician to better understand aggregate packing and its influence on mix volumetrics and compatability.  In addition:

    1. The Bailey Method applies to coarse graded, fine graded and SMA Mixtures
    2. The method can help explain why some Superpave mixtures are difficult to compact
    3. The method also provides insight as to why small gradation changes, which often occur during production and are within allowable tolerances, can cause significant changes to mixture volumetric properties and/or field.

The One-Day Course:

This introductory Bailey Course will provide an initiation and overview of how the method works and how other contractors are using the method to save time and money.  Course details:

    1. Participants will receive a course manual and CD containing a Basic Analysis Spreadsheet and other reference material discussed in class
    2. This course is designed for individuals with mix design or quality control experience that want to learn more about design and control of HMA mixes to optimize volumetrics and field compactability
    3. This introductory one-day course will focus on the practical “day to day” aspects of the Bailey Method.  By utilizing the Basic Analysis Spreadsheet, the participants should be able to start using the Bailey Method Principles in their work
    4. For more information on the course, Synopsis/Agenda is posted on DAPA’s website, www.dakota-asphalt.org
